A strange weekend really. It was set to be a bit of a gathering but my brother bailed (good excuse though as he was expecting a baby on Monday - welcome to the world baby Emme) and another mate bailed due to ill health (get well soon Rakesh). Still, Phil and Steve managed the journey. Pre race pasta at Piccolino was great and we managed to avoid the pubs on the way home.
Breakfast was odd - Susanna Ried, Sian Williams, Sophy Raworth, Jenni Falconer and Iwan Thomas all came and sat at the table next to me. They didn’t recognise me though!
Weather was perfect for the race, but I still hadn't decided if I was pacing or going for it. I still hadn't made up my mind in the pen. However, as the gun went and I "high fived" Ellie Simmonds and Katherine Copeland I was off. I decided to see how long I could keep the pace and as the Red Arrows flew over and the rain poured I ploughed on.
I felt great and as I came down South Shields sea front I knew that not only was a PB on the cards, but I was going to go sub 1:30 if I held on. The other runners around me where in a similar position and with a final surge we all unwittingly pulled each other over the line. I was very emotional - a PB, sub 1:30 and all in the Great North Run!
