Day 6 Saturday 4th February: 3rd Caves 3,971m to School Hut 4,722m. Distance 4.9km
Today was a much easier day than the rest with the continued traversing of the northern slopes to School Hut (4722m), our Base Camp. The distance was much shorter than previous days (4.9km) but with 751m of height gain.
Below: School Hut, our base camp for summit night
On reaching the camp, we dumped our gear and did a short acclimatisation hike up to 4900mtrs then returned for lunch.
I found trying to sleep for the afternoon simply too difficult – I was anxious/excited about getting to the summit. We had evening meal then were immediately dispatched back to sleep.
We decided to split in to groups at the outset – with me, Matty and Angie all leaving at midnight, the others setting out at 11pm, with the objective of us meeting up en route and summiting together for sunrise.
As agreed we were woken up at 11pm to prep for our departure to the summit at midnight – well, I say woken; a combination of my excitement and Matty`s snoring translated in to maybe 1 hr of sleep. Even with hardly any sleep, the adrenaline was pumping. This was it.
